Soot Book
"A record of early projects, nascent enterprises, and exhibition ideas, as well as the artist’s first attempt at book binding. Following the September 11th attacks, the contents of the Soot Book were redacted—blackened with ink, charcoal, and oil sticks, a practice the artist periodically revisits."
c.332x257mm, cream-colored paper, 40 leaves, COMPLETE, in five quires of eight leaves each; inside covers lined with cork and a title plaque (inscribed, "Book of Projects March MM Sylvanus Joseph Shaw V [strikethrough signature] 2000"), enforced with paper tape; watermark: “Ingres d’Arches MBM Made in France ∞”; INSCRIBED in BLACK INK, PENCIL, and COLORED PENCIL, obliterated throughout with india and sumi ink, ballpoint pen, charcoal, whiteout, and oil crayon; minor coffee staining on iii1r, iii3v, iii4r, iii5v - iii8v; ORIGINAL BINDING of black cowhide over plywood, embossed toward spine with nine horizontal bands of linen binders tape.
